“Overboard”: The Needy Girl Boss’s Hyperfixations and Quest To Have Hobbies
My Momma Said I Go Overboard When I Get Into Something. I Think My Ferocity Is What Makes Me Great; A Fear of Failure Keeps Me Hungry
I am not going to lie, I may have given up on The Bear too early. I enjoyed season 1, I just never went back to start season 2. I did the most recent season of Only Murders in the Building the same way.
I should have known it would provide me with a couple I could fully ship — Carmy and Sydney — and play off my #booktok vibes with:
I talk about slow-burn workplace romances because I am well into my #booktok romance/dark romance/romantacy/YA/Fiction/Fantasy book girl era, and my mother has also recognized this. I was always a bookworm growing up, so momma knows my ferocity for reading (she’s the one who bought me the damn books — including encyclopedias — because “you never know when you need to know some shit” or something to the effect.). Momma also knows my ferocity of going to extremes when I hyper-fixate on a hobby.
My current collections are:
vinyl (an impression collection that steadily goes. It IS expensive, but this was my pandemic hobby and because I love music, it will stick.)
pens (a lifelong obsession that momma is also well aware of. I have more than 200 on hand.)
writing things — proof of this Substack and my career
Since I am in my book girl era, I had my iPad mini and two books in my purse when I visited my family with Cody this weekend. This is his birthday week (happy birthday, my handsome, blue-eyed bear man) so momma made him a homemade banana pudding, his favorite dessert. Momma is the family baker. Even when she’s not in the mood, her confections are ELITE.
So, while discussing my latest fixation with momma, Cody and I went to the mall before we visited and stopped by Barnes and Noble, where I picked up a few things. I also mentioned the two in my purse and the ones I received a few days before.
“You go off on the deep end with shit — overboard,” Momma said, incredulous.
“This is my regular behavior when I obsess over things,” I replied.
“Yeah, but that doesn’t make it less crazy” Momma laughed.
It doesn’t top my brother later going through my purse, seeing The Ritual, by Shantel Tessier, and asking me if it was about witchcraft:

We only have a few days before Cowboy Carter comes out. Gerd your loins; this is King Bey’s world, and we’re living in it.
